About the Word Counter

This free word counter updates live as you type or paste โ€” no button to press. It counts words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, and estimates your reading time based on an average reading speed of 200 words per minute.

The tool is useful for blog posts, essays, LinkedIn posts, social media captions, cover letters, and academic writing โ€” anywhere you need to hit a specific word count or stay within a limit. The character count is especially useful for tweets, SMS messages, and ad copy where strict character limits apply.

Word Counter FAQ

The average adult reads approximately 200โ€“250 words per minute. Our word counter uses 200 wpm for reading time estimates, which gives a conservative and accurate estimate for most content types.

For SEO purposes, blog posts of 1,500โ€“2,500 words tend to rank well as they cover topics comprehensively. Short posts of 300โ€“600 words work for news and updates. Long-form content over 2,000 words often attracts more backlinks.

A word is any sequence of non-space characters separated by whitespace. Numbers, hyphenated words (e.g. check-in), and contractions (e.g. don't) each count as one word. Our counter splits on whitespace to count accurately.

X (formerly Twitter) has a 280 character limit for standard accounts. URLs count as 23 characters regardless of actual length. Our character counter gives you the raw character count to help you stay within limits.

At an average reading speed of 200 words per minute, 1,000 words takes approximately 5 minutes to read. At a faster speed of 300 wpm, it takes about 3.3 minutes. Our calculator uses 200 wpm for a conservative estimate.
