GST/HST FAQ
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a 5% federal tax applied to most goods and services sold in Canada. It applies in all provinces and territories. Businesses with more than $30,000 in annual revenue must register for a GST/HST account with the CRA, and charge, collect, and remit the tax quarterly or annually.
HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) combines the federal GST with the provincial sales tax into a single tax collected by the CRA. Ontario's HST is 13% (5% federal + 8% provincial), while Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, and Newfoundland & Labrador use a 15% HST. In provinces without HST, businesses collect the 5% federal GST plus a separate provincial sales tax.
Five provinces use HST: Ontario (13%), New Brunswick (15%), Nova Scotia (15%), Prince Edward Island (15%), and Newfoundland & Labrador (15%). All other provinces — BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec — charge GST plus their own provincial sales tax separately. Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut have no provincial tax, so only the 5% federal GST applies.
To add GST to a price: multiply the price by 0.05 to get the tax, then add to the original. For example: $100 × 0.05 = $5 GST, total = $105. To remove GST from a total that already includes tax: divide by 1.05. For Ontario's 13% HST: multiply by 1.13 to add, or divide by 1.13 to reverse. This calculator handles all provinces automatically.
Most basic groceries are zero-rated — no GST or HST applies. Zero-rated items include fresh meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, fruits, vegetables, bread, and cereals. However, restaurant meals, snack foods, candy, carbonated beverages, and most prepared foods are fully taxable. If you're unsure whether a specific item is taxable, check the CRA's list of zero-rated and exempt supplies at canada.ca.
About This GST/HST Calculator
Canada's sales tax system is one of the more complex in the world — each province applies tax differently. Five provinces (Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Newfoundland & Labrador) use a Harmonized Sales Tax that combines the federal and provincial rates into one. Four provinces collect the federal GST alongside their own PST as separate taxes. Quebec has its own QST administered by Revenu Québec. And four jurisdictions (Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut) have no provincial sales tax at all.
This calculator handles all 13 provinces and territories with their 2026 rates. Use the "Add tax" direction when pricing goods or estimating the total cost of a purchase before you pay. Use "Remove tax" when you have a receipt total and need to break out the pre-tax amount — useful for bookkeeping, expense reports, or claiming input tax credits. The reverse calculation divides by (1 + total rate), which is the correct method to extract the original price from a tax-inclusive total.
Tax rates shown are current as of 2026. The federal GST rate has been 5% since 2008. Provincial rates change occasionally — Nova Scotia lowered its HST from 15% to 14% in 2014 and then back to 15%, as a reminder that rates can shift. Always verify the current rate with the CRA at canada.ca or your provincial revenue authority before filing returns or making business pricing decisions.
