How many stat holidays are there in 2026?

It depends on where you work. Under employment standards, Ontario has 9 paid public holidays, British Columbia, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut have 11, and Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador have 6. Federally regulated workers — banks, airlines, telecoms, Canada Post — get 10 under the Canada Labour Code.

Only five holidays are paid everywhere in Canada: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Canada Day, Labour Day and Christmas Day. Everything else varies by province.

This list covers employment standards holidays — the days your employer must pay you for. Government offices, schools and banks often close on extra days that aren't paid holidays for most private-sector workers, like Ontario's Civic Holiday.

How stat holiday pay is calculated

If you qualify, you get holiday pay for the day off — roughly one average day's wages. Each province uses its own formula:

  • Ontario: (wages + vacation pay from the last 4 work weeks) ÷ 20.
  • Quebec: 1/20 of wages from the 4 complete weeks before the holiday week.
  • BC: wages from the last 30 days ÷ days worked.
  • Alberta and NWT: wages from the last 4 weeks ÷ days worked.
  • Saskatchewan, Manitoba, PEI: 5% of wages from the last 4 weeks.
  • NS, NB, NL, Yukon, Nunavut: a regular day's pay.

If you work the holiday, most provinces pay 1.5× for the hours worked on top of holiday pay. Use our stat holiday pay calculator for your exact amount.

When a stat holiday falls on a weekend

In 2026, Boxing Day falls on a Saturday and National Indigenous Peoples Day falls on a Sunday. In Ontario, if a public holiday falls on a day you don't normally work, your employer must give you another day off with holiday pay — or, if you agree in writing, pay you holiday pay for the day instead. Most other provinces have similar substitute-day rules, though Alberta only pays holiday pay when the holiday falls on a day you would normally work.

Stat Holidays 2026 FAQ

Ontario has nine public holidays in 2026: New Year's Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The Civic Holiday in August and Remembrance Day are not public holidays under Ontario's Employment Standards Act.
Federally regulated employees get 10 general holidays: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. These apply to industries like banking, airlines, telecom and Canada Post in every province.
After Thanksgiving on October 12, the remaining 2026 stat holidays are Remembrance Day (Wednesday, November 11) in most provinces outside Ontario and Quebec, Christmas Day (Friday, December 25) everywhere, and Boxing Day (Saturday, December 26) in Ontario and for federally regulated workers.
No — this is a common misconception. The Civic Holiday on the first Monday of August is not one of Ontario's public holidays, so employers don't have to give the day off or pay holiday pay. Many employers give it anyway, and it is a statutory holiday in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
British Columbia, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut each have 11 paid holidays under employment standards. Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador have the fewest, with 6.
In Ontario, if a public holiday like Boxing Day falls on a day you don't normally work, your employer must give you a substitute day off with holiday pay, or pay holiday pay for the day if you agree in writing. Rules vary by province — Alberta, for example, only pays holiday pay when the holiday falls on your normal work day.
